Illumination helps to create connections in Canada’s largest carbon-neutral community
Zibi, a 34-acre master-planned community overlooking the Ottawa River in Ottawa and Gatineau (Canada), stands as the country’s largest carbon-neutral development, featuring commercial, shopping, dining and residential spaces. Emphasizing community connections, the design incorporates nearly eight acres of parks and public spaces, fostering social interaction and environmental sustainability in the heart of the city.
Head Street Square, one of the public spaces in Zibi, is designed as a versatile venue for events such as festivals, concerts, and art shows. To support these varied activities, CSW, a nationally recognized landscape architecture firm, selected Hydrel's SAF14 RGBW3 floodlights for their adaptability and high performance, ensuring the space can seamlessly host a wide range of events.
In collaboration with CSW, it was decided to flank two sides of the square with nine vertical steel girders, each intended to host a floodlight at the top within its niche. Hydrel's SAF14 floodlights, available in knuckle or yoke mounts, provided the needed flexibility, allowing the landscape architects to select a yoke mount that effectively fits the unconventional space. With a depth of just over 6 inches, the fixture, when combined with the yoke mount, extends slightly beyond the niche's edge. During installation, the 12-inch face of the luminaire was angled downward and directed toward the public space to optimize lighting and ambiance.
The SAF14 floodlights at Head Street Square feature RGBW Quad Tech, offering precise control over color temperature and dynamic lighting effects. The luminaire delivers smooth, even illumination across the outdoor square—free from visible color separation and without compromising lumen output—supporting both visual comfort and vibrant atmospheres for outdoor events.
The luminaire's clear watershed lens improves light output and efficiency by directing illumination precisely where it's needed. With a 40-degree distribution, it delivers broad, balanced coverage across the square while minimizing spill light. As a result, the nine SAF14 floodlights effectively work together to offer full coverage of the large square.
SAF14 luminaires also offer additional proprietary technologies from Hydrel. Flow-Thru technology ensures superior water resistance. And its Taper-Lock technology features a "Sure Lock" knuckle seat for infinite aiming and unparalleled locking ability.
The landscape architects selected a black exterior finish with a zinc undercoat to provide additional corrosion protection. The luminaires will withstand Ottawa's elements, whether it's summer rain or a winter snowstorm.
Zibi Square employees can control the illumination with the assistance of a DMX driver, which is conveniently integrated into each fixture rather than in a remote box. This was a key element in the set-up due to the unusual placement of the steel girders and accompanying luminaires.
Zibi has received numerous accolades for its innovation and design, including the Neighbourhood Planning Excellence Award from the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Award for Excellence from the International Society of City and Regional Planners.
